Universidad de Chile is the most traditional and largest public university and one of the main scientific research institutions in Chile. Its Computer Science Department has 20 full time professors, hosts a CS engineer career, and MSc and Ph.D. programs in Computer science (Ph.D. Program with approximate 30 students from Chile and abroad) and host permanently several post-docs and visiting researchers from around the world.

The Semantic Web and Databases group at the CS Department, UCL, is composed of 5 faculty members (Pablo Barcelo, Benjamin Bustos, Claudio Gutierrez, Jorge Perez and Barbara Poblete) plus a strong group working in text databases, algorithms and data compression, which interacts with the database group. The group of Semantic Web and Databases has several Ph.D. and M.Sc. students, visiting post-docs, and regular seminars and events in the area. In addition, it maintains very close collaboration with the Semantic Web and databases group at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, which consists of three faculty members and several postdoc, PhD and master's students.

Our group is currently participating in the FP7-PEOPLE-2009-IRSES Project (# 247601) "Net2 - Network for Enabling Networked Knowledge", whose main goal is to develop principles, technologies and techniques for creating, managing and exploiting networks of knowledge using the Web.  Given the expertise of the members of the Semantic Web and databases group, this group will participate in WP1-4.
